Insects such as mosquito’s, midges and sand flies, that are living and breeding outside, besides their biting nuisance, are carriers of diseases like Dengue Fever, Malaria, Leishmaniasis and Chagas disease. Rodents are also responsible either as carriers or hosts for the spread of disease to humans, particularly in countries with poor sanitation and inadequate hygiene measures.

Successful Vector control methods can help to reduce the spread of these diseases, which can potentially devastate communities. Increases in global travel means it is not just those living in problem areas that are affected, visitors to the areas are also at risk of becoming infected. This is a major concern for tourism and trade in affected regions.

International attention is currently focused on Malaria reduction throughout the world. For example Nigeria has the highest number of malaria cases and fatalities, with somewhere in the region of 57.5 million people affected by the disease and around 225,000 deaths per year. Hockley’s distributing Agents in Nigeria are suppliers to the Roll Back Malaria programme. The program involves the provision and promotion of ‘Insecticide Treated Mosquito Nets’ and “interior residual spray” to poorer communities, which help to reduce the risk of being bitten during the night when mosquitoes are most active.
